I’m Terrible At Names19 Oct 2012
I’ll admit there are times when I forget someone’s name but I just don’t buy the excuse when people say “I’m terrible at remembering names”.
Really it’s just laziness.
I try to make a conscious effort to repeat a person’s name in my head when I meet them.
And, in business meetings when I meet new people, I draw a rough overhead view of the meeting table and when folks introduce themselves, I write down each person’s name, sometimes with a note on a distinguishing feature like glasses, or shirt color, etc
You’d be amazed how easy it is and how you can really get someone’s attention when you begin a question with someone’s name:
“Brian, you say you’re terrible at remembering names, can I give you some advice on that?”
