With name creation so challenging these days, it’s not surprising many companies pull out their language dictionaries to find unusual (and legally viable) names.
Hulu means ‘gourd’ in Mandarin to evoke a repositary of film content.
Macan, Porsche’s newest vehicle means ‘Tiger’ in Indonesia.
Roku, the streaming TV box means “six” in Japanese.
To the uninitiated, these names just sound abstract except perhaps Roku which does emit an Asian tone.
Then of course take Haagen Dazs. The name is completly made up but sounds German or European. As such, it conveys a message of quality ice cream largely through imititation and its authoritative tone.
